PRESUPPOSITIONS Reading Group
Have you ever wondered what presuppositions in linguistics are about?
Now there is a chance to study the topic in a group of other interested researchers at the UiL OTS. The idea is to have an informal forum where interested UiL OTSers could carry out a free discussion on topics that are relevant to all of us. In the first one or two meetings, Yoad Winter will present recent work on semantic presupposition as revived in works by Philippe Schlenker, Danny Fox, Emanuel Chemla, Ben George, and others.
The topics for potential further meetings will be determined by the interested attendees themselves!
First meeting: 14 February 2019, 14:00-16:00 (Sweelinckzaal, Drift 21)
For the first meeting, the only background reading that would be needed is a short extract from Chierchia & McConnel-Ginet’s elementary textbook: Chierchia, Gennaro, McConnell-Ginet, Sally (1990), Meaning and Grammar : An Introduction to Semantics. Chapter 1, section 3.2 – presupposition The book is electronically available at the University library.
Second meeting: 15 March 2019, 15:15 (Drift 21, room 104). More info.
